So the International Year of Astronomy 2009 is now over, and what a year it has been!
Over 1/4 of a million people have experienced We Are Astronomers in a digital planetarium and that number will hopefully grow and grow into 2010 and beyond. The dome film will be screening in UK domes throughout the new year, please check your nearest dome for full details and availability.
We would like to thank everyone who was involved in the making of WAA, those that continue to support it and everyone who was gone to watch it. We couldn’t of told this epic tale of international collaboration without you!
…and don’t forget, we are all astronomers so be sure to look up and enjoy our awesome universe.
Now that production has ended on We Are Astronomers we finally have some time to write about some of the people and projects that we have been turning to for help, advice and inspiration whilst making the show. We started by looking at all the other IYA cornerstone projects to see what they were all about and where our show could fit in and have it’s own unique voice. One of the projects that grabbed our attention was Cosmic Diary, which is a blog written by many different people working in the field of astronomy from all over the world. It gives an amazing insight into the lives of those writing on it and into the contemporary world of astronomy.
It was very apparent from projects like this one that there was stong sense of ‘working together’ in the field of Astronomy that we hadn’t really thought about before. You only have to click on a few links on the blog to realise that each of the people on there are involved in some of the biggest projects in the world and are tied to countless other people from around the globe working on the same projects. So if you want to find out more about current events in the world of astronomy or find out more about the people involved, then Cosmic Diary is definately worth a browse.
I’m sure not many people outside of the “space” world are aware of this but 2009 is officially the International Year of Astronomy! What does this mean? Will it be as popular as 2008’s International Year of the Potato?
Well, we are very excited about IYA2009 (it’s nickname). There are lots and lots of great events and websites around at the moment, the best place to find out what is happening near you is https://www.astronomy2009.co.uk/ for those in the UK.
The international site https://www.astronomy2009.org/ is also worth a look to see what is happening around the world and find your countries IYA site.
We Are Astronomers is an official IYA project and will be launching across the UK 23 May 2009.
